As an Indian living abroad
we live with one foot in India and the other in our chosen home abroad. There’s a feeling many of us know too well, scrolling through news from India while sitting in Toronto, London, or Sydney, and feeling that familiar ache. Not quite homesickness, not quite anger. Just that tug of being in-between.
We are Sudeshna and Mili and we are building DoorDesi– a community of Indians living abroad who care deeply about what’s happening in India, want to stay informed, build (and maintain) a stronger connection with our maiden home.
It is a space where we can cheer India's space missions, unpack casteism, opine on the general elections, from afar. It's where our in-betweenness isn't a problem to solve, it's a shared experience with 32 million (and counting) global desis.
What’s in it for you:
📧 Bi-weekly updates from India - News, culture, and insights carefully curated for Indians living abroad. No overwhelm, just what matters to your global desi life.
🌍 A community that gets it - Network with Indians living abroad who understand the unique challenges of caring about home and families from afar.
🏠 A sense of belonging - Finally, a space where our transient, complicated relationship with India is not just understood, but celebrated.
💭 Meaningful conversations - Discuss what's happening in India with people who share your perspective and your distance.
Forced or chosen, migration is a big part of the Indian history. And we have carried our culture like seeds, planting it in new soil, leading to what we have today in a powerful Indian diaspora. DoorDesi is an attempt to reframe our relationship with India from a place of guilt or confusion into connection and pride.
Being an Indian outside India is our strength, not a weakness.
We are not Pardesis. We are DoorDesis.
If you are an Indian living abroad. Welcome. You’re home!
